Vineyards cover an area of 120 hectares
and are located at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level.
The soil is sandy, chalky , rocky on the surface and very poor in
nutrients.
The climate is continental with extreme weather conditions in spite
of the nearby Mediterranean sea. The contrast between day and night
temperatures is frequently more than 25 Celsius degrees during the
growth period.
Rainfall is scarce and irregular-less than 300 mm. a year.
All these weather conditions grow small size and very concentrated
berries which make well- balanced wines that are not only full-bodied
but highly aromatic.
VARIETIES
Juan Gil´s wines are mainly elaborated with Monastrell, autochthonous
variety from the south-eastern Spain. Jumilla is the most important
growing area of this variety in the world.
Monastrell has been grown for some centuries and is perfectly suited
to the prevailing conditions in this region even to periods of drought.
Wines obtained from this variety are full bodied, with a deep ruby-red
colour and tinges of purple. They are fruity on the nose and cherry
or plum-like evocative.
The high quality and character of this grape makes possible use
it in all Juan Gil´s wines either as a single one or “in
the coupage” with other non autochthonous varieties.
Other varieties such as “Cabernet Sauvignon”, “Shyrah”,
“Merlot” y “Petit Verdot” are also used,
all of them perfectly adapted to the weather conditions of the region.
